Owning Your No is the Greatest Gift you Give Yourself and Others

Greetings Ladies and Gentlemen, 

Recently I got stung not owning my NO. A girlfriend of mine asked for a favor. Could I adjust some copy for her? Of course, I said yes as she has been so good to me in the past. Little did I know that the scope of work would take so long to do. It took me over two and a half hours to complete. The timing of her request was not fantastic and compromised the opportunity for me to be of service to my very own clients that I serve. I had no idea the piece of work she would take so long to complete.

After I had finished the work, I reflected on my inability to say NO. I realized that I had not honored myself by saying YES. I did not hear, see and value myself in an exceptional way. I was acting ‘two-faced’ towards the clients I serve.

I am continually telling salespeople to hear, see and value their customers while they do business with them, yet I wasn’t doing it for myself.  I was not delivering an exceptional client experience towards me.

 An exceptional client experience begins in your very own backyard. How can you be a coach, consultant or advisor if you have not ‘walking your talk’ first? It is imperative you experience what you teach. If you don’t, you are being a phony and not serving your clients in the best possible light.

Always remember to pause before saying a YES or NO. Pauses can last a couple of days while you think about it. You don’t have to succumb to pressure to announce your YES or NO.  Remember the more you say NO you are saving yourself for a powerful YES for someone who truly needs your services.

A great question to get clear about a YES or NO is to ask yourself. Is this in my best interest right now and wait for the answer. It should come through as a HELL YES or a HELL NO. Have the courage to act on whatever comes up. Your gut instinct will let you know.
